A depressing time...

The headlines in the news recently are all rather... depressing. Death, redundancies, closures, credit crunch.. the lot. But one stoey that did catch my eye whilst reading the headlines in the local papers, was of a man who died after being buried in coal.
The Man,David Bewes, 61, of Wadebridge, was working at Falmouth docks, became trapped as he was unloading coal from his vehicle onto a coal pile. Other workers tried to dig him out whilst waiting for the emergency services to arrive. The man was airlifted to Treliske Hospital, but unfortunately was pronouced dead on arrival.

Reading this story it reminded me of the time when there was a major disater when waste from the Merthyr Vale colliery slid down the mountainside, in Aberfan, Wales swamping a local school and killing around 144 people, of which 116 were children. All of this happened on the 21st October 1966.

Such sad circumstances, but a lesson to be learnt from this, not only is coal bad for the environment, but it can also cruch you. Think twice before working in this industry.
