Closures across the country

Yes, as you may have heard on the television, radio or seen in the newspapers, all 807 Woolworths stores are due to be closed by the 4th January 2009. The company went into administration on the 27th November after a long duration of struggles within the company itself. Deloitte issued the company with a closing sale only a week ago, and now have come to the stage where every store will close by the 4th taking almost 30,000 jobs. Deloitte's plans are phased in a programme at different stages. This will start by 207 stores on the 27th December, then a further 200 on the 30th. 200 more on the 2nd January and the last 200 on the 4th. Every store will get 10 days notice before they have to stop trading.
Yesterday the First 207 stores were notified of their closures. Including the one that which i am currently employed with. PENZANCE.
If no last minute buyer is found, then all employees will face redundancy, which is just what you need in the festive season.
“We are shocked that staff will only be given 10 days notice of store closures and deeply disappointed by the news that no buyer has yet been found for Woolworths. Redundancy is devastating at any time of the year, but particularly so at Christmas.." - John Gorle, Usdaw National Officer.
“I am personally devastated for the 30,000 Woolworths staff and our members can rest assured we will do everything we can to assist them at this difficult time. The Woolworths staff are extremely loyal, dedicated and well trained and wherever vacancies exist in the retail sector we will use our contacts to find alternative employment as speedily as possible.” - John Hannett, Usdaw General Secretary.
